This is VERY strong - BAM! And you're absolutely right - it does make the 'nasal cavity' image seem rather generic by comparison. I'm commenting in the wrong order here, as on your last piece of concept art as posted, I said how exciting it was to see you combining the bold graphical style with painterly elements, and this image does it too. I'm excited to see how you might take this into cg; something about it reminds me of some speculative work Tom was doing a while back... He did these pulsing 'starfish/virus' in Maya that had an organic, yet architectural feel. I just browsed his blog looking for the post, couldn't find it - but there's a short glimpse here on Vimeo:
